Photography Competitions I have Organized Galleries

20080713 'The Vibrant Triangle' : This competition was open to students of my "Introduction to Digital Photography" classes. The theme was "The Vibrant Triangle" (we live in the Triangle area of NC). Entrants could submit up to ten pictures, any size up to 16"x20", mounted or not (no prejudice either way in judging), B&W or color. Work submitted was to be entrants' own original work, taken with a digital camera at any time; no photo editing other than sharpening, cropping, other standard optimizations like digital artifact reduction and contrast adjustment, or panoramic processing was allowed (photo.net's definition of unmanipulated image with the allowance of panoramic processing). I judged the (physical and not these later submitted electronic) pictures on criteria of creativity, aesthetics, and interpretation of the theme.

I didn't realize till I received the images that "Triangle" was ambiguous and some used the term geometrically instead of geographically. I judged the prints with either definition in mind.

All of these pictures are by the named photographer, who retains all rights. Please email me to be put in touch with any of the photographers if you want permission to copy or print any of their images.

200801-02 (6-week Carrboro ArtsCenter) Assignment "2 1/2" - Informal "Something Important about Carrboro or Chapel Hill" Competition (due January 29) : We unexpectedly had a class day, January 24, 2008, off, so had an informal contest to encourage folks to continue practicing their photography skills. "Please apply what we've learned so far about photography to submit ... up to six images, taken between now [January 24] and then [January 29], that you think capture something important about Carrboro or Chapel Hill. How you interpret that is up to you - street scenes, a landscape with a local landmark, events, people enjoying something that relates to the towns, a local institution, .... Please don't do any photo editing other than cropping. Don't forget to include a title."

There were so many very nice pictures! It was difficult to settle on a few winners. Shannon Grabowski's UNC Campus Building, Shadow of Time was the fourth prize winner, Caroline Ring's Walking meditation: you only need your feet won third prize and her Reflections on affluence and activism was the second prize winner. Each of these winners received a certificate for a free 8"x10" print from University Photo and Frame. Thanks to them, and thanks to Southeastern Camera, who provided the first prize gift, Digital Pursuits DP1000 Ultimate Digital Camera Cleaning Kit worth $14.95, which went to Troy Kay for his Education on a Silver Platter.

Each of these pictures is by a student in my class; each student retains all rights. Please email me to be put in touch with any of the photographers if you want permission to copy or print any of their images.
