Holiday Lights
My daughter and I enjoyed seeing this amazing Christmas lightshow made up of about 55,000 bulbs on December 14, 2014. According to a nice article in the December 18, 2014 issue of the Durham Herald-Sun, Michael Shoaf, age 23 and now a graduate student in fine arts studying lighting design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has had a fascination with lights since a child. For many years, he has put Christmas lighting up at his parents' house. When I first enjoyed it years ago, there was no music, but since about 2010, it is synced to music that observers can hear by tuning to 104.5 FM radio. I don't know how early (Thanksgiving? early or mid December?) the show begins, but this year it runs 6-10:30p through early January 2015.
Read MoreThe display is at the Shoaf home at 3518 Donnigale Avenue in Southwest Durham near Durham Academy and just west of the intersection of Garrett and Pickett Roads; there is a small sign on Pickett Road. From Garrett, turn L onto Pickett and take the 2nd R just ahead onto Brecknock Street. From the west, take Pickett past Randolph Road; after two entrances to Pineview Circle on the L, take the next L onto Brecknock. Brecknock St is a short road that ends at a "T"; turn L onto Donningale - the house is at or near the end of the street on the R.
